The Gotha Go 244 transport aircraft was developed as a solution to the difficulties faced in using cargo gliders and a shortage of tow aircraft. This variant was created by converting various modifications of Go 242 airframes, with aircraft engines installed in front of the tail beams, fuel tanks placed inside the aircraft, and a well-equipped cockpit for flight. The most common engines used were French Gnome-Rhone 14M engines, and defensive armament included MG 15 or MG 81Z 7.9 mm machine guns. The Go 244B-2 was based on the Go 242B-2 airframe and featured an original landing gear with oil shock absorbers. It was primarily used in several Luftwaffe transport squadrons in Greece and other countries, later being utilized in flight schools and training centres.
