The 9A52-2 Smerch-M is a potent Soviet multiple rocket launcher, employed to neutralize personnel, armoured, and lightly-armoured targets in densely-populated regions, artillery emplacements, command posts, and ammunition caches. This system was first developed in the early 1980s and adopted by the USSR Armed Forces in 1989. In 1983, it was given the code-name MRL 280mm M1983 by Western observers. Eventually, it will be replaced by the 9A52-4 Tornado. When together with its 9T234-2 Trans loader, and 1K123 Vivary Fire Control System, the 9A52-2 (12-round) system is referred to as the 9K58 complex.
The first foreign users of the system were Kuwait with 27 systems delivered and the United Arab Emirates. China has also purchased this version of the launcher, where its accuracy has been improved.
