The BM-21 Grad MRL was developed by the Soviets in the 1960s and adopted by the Army in 1963, replacing the BM-14. The system consists of a Ural-375D truck chassis with 40 launch tubes which can be moved away from the cab. Later, Ural-4320 six-by-six trucks were used.
