The Type 74 120mm mortar is a towed mortar system that is used by the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF). It was developed and manufactured by Japan Steel Works, and has been in service since 1974. The Type 74 is a rifled mortar system, which means that it has spiral grooves cut into the inside of the barrel, which imparts a spin to the projectile as it is fired. This spin helps to improve the accuracy of the projectile in flight.
The Type 74 120mm mortar can fire a variety of different types of projectiles, including high-explosive (HE), smoke, and illumination rounds. It has a maximum range of around 7,500 meters and can fire up to 20 rounds per minute. The Type 74 is a very mobile system, it has a crew of six, and can be quickly set up and taken down for transport. The mortar system is typically towed behind a 4×4 truck.
The Type 74 120mm mortar has been used by the JGSDF in various training exercises, and has also been deployed in peacekeeping operations abroad. The system is considered to be reliable and accurate, and has been in service for more than 40 years.
It’s worth noting that the JGSDF is in the process of modernizing its artillery systems and might replace the Type 74 with a newer system in the near future.
